BREAKING: Melaye Denied Bail, To Remain In Police Custody




The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has been denied bail in the case of an alleged conspiracy and aiding of jailbreak.
DEBO'S BLOG - The Senator who arrived in Lokoja, Kogi State on Thursday morning appeared before the Magistrate court on a stretcher amidst heavy security.
As the case commenced, the prosecution council Alex Isihon, stated that the court did not have the jurisdiction to entertain the case.
But counsel to Senator Melaye, Mike Ozekhome in his submission argued that the court had the power by virtue of the Constitution to try the case.
Furthermore, he quoted section 97 of the Penal Code which stated that the offence of conspiracy is bailable according to the Kogi State Administration of Criminal Justice.
However, after a short recess, Chief Magistrate Suleiman Abdulahi denied the bail application and ruled that Melaye would remain in custody for the next 37 days.
The case was then adjourned until June 11, 2018.

Woman uses four-year-old baby to pay N100 debt

The Ebonyi state government has commenced investigation into how a mother used her four-year-old daughter to offset a debt of N100. The woman, Veronica Igwe, according to the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Ministry, was been invited for questioning and later handed over to the police. She allegedly gave Uloma, her daughter, to Josephine Nwali after she could not pay a debt of N100. The transaction reportedly took place at the Abakaliki Rice Mill. Ms. Igwe told officials of the ministry that she took the decision to hand Uloma to Ms. Nwali when the pressure from the woman was becoming unbearable. When Ms. Igwe offered her daughter to Ms. Nwali in place of the money, she accepted. The creditor then took Uloma to her house at CAS Campus, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, where she had been for nine months before officials of the ministry got wind of the incident and went after her.
